First of all, it is easy to keep cool in Finland. Due to cool climate you have free cooling at your disposal up to 365 days a year. At the same time, the energy prices are among the lowest in Europe.
Since April 2014 large-scale data centers have also enjoyed lower energy tax rates similarly to other energy-intensive industries. Moreover, the corporate tax is the lowest in the Nordics and way below the EU average.
It is also possible to reuse the center’s waste heat by selling it back to the energy company. For example in Mäntsälä, the thermal energy generated by the Yandex data center is enough to heat a total of 5,000 households, which are connected to the town’s central heating system.
